Harlequin Rabbit Breed Profile
Description
Harlequins are a large breed of rabbit (6.5-9 lbs by ARBA standards) characterized by their distinctive markings. They have either orange, fawn, or white markings alternating with either black, blue, chocolate, or lilac markings. They have ears carried upright in a 'V' shape. In the USA, they are commercial type. You may also view a full breakdown of the ARBA Harlequin Standard.
Temperament
Harlequins are amazingly gentle rabbits. They have wonderful temperaments and typically come right up to the front of their pen to greet people. They tend to be very calm and not stress as easily as some breeds. They are typically curious and playful. Though they make wonderful pets, they are not popular as companion animals because of their size. People tend to prefer either dwarf or giant sized breeds. Consider a harlequin as your next pet rabbit!
History
Originally known as the "Japanese", the harlequin breed only came in the orange and black color variety, and it originated in France. The new pattern mutation appeared in a litter of Dutch and was first exhibited in 1887 in Jarin D'Acclimation (Paris). During World War 2, the name "Japanese" fell out of favor, and the breed became known as the Harlequin. Around this time, the magpie color group also came into existence, and the blue, chocolate, and lilac Japanese varieties were also mentioned in standards. For a full history of the breed, please see the AHRC breed history.
Other
Harlequins are typically phenomenal mothers. They easily raise litters of 8 or more, and they are known for their excellent milk production. They therefore make great foster mothers for breeds with poorer mothers. They also have good fertility.
